Wolves staff have travelled to Mexico as they seek to complete the stunning signing of Raul Jimenez.
The 35-year-old striker is currently with his national team preparing for the World Cup, with Mexico hosting South Africa in the tournament’s opening game on Thursday.
Wolves staff have travelled to meet Jimenez as they aim to complete a deal to re-sign the free agent this week, who is a fan favourite at Molineux after his previous spell with the club.
Fulham announced today that Jimenez would leave the club at the expiry of his contract and Championship Wolves are set to beat several other clubs to his signing, with sides in America’s MLS interested.
Following the 1-1 draw between Wolves and Fulham in the final Molineux game of last season, Jimenez opened the door to a stunning Wolves return in an interview with the Express & Star, where he spoke about the ‘possibility’ of coming back to the club.
It was also revealed by the Express & Star at that time that Wolves had opened early talks with Jimenez over a return.
Those talks have since advanced and Wolves are closing in on an agreement for the striker.
Wolves staff are in Mexico to complete the agreement, finalise his medical and re-sign the forward with the hope of having it complete this week.
Jimenez scored 57 goals and notched 23 assists in 166 Wolves appearances between 2018 and 2023, before making a £5.5million move to Fulham that summer.
He was a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo’s successful side that got to back-to-back seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League, a Europa League quarter-final and an FA Cup semi-final.
He scored 13 Premier League goals in his first season, initially on loan from Benfica before completing a club record £30million move, and he then notched 17 top flight goals in a tremendous second season.
He fractured his skull in an horrendous clash of heads with Arsenal’s David Luiz in November 2020, before returning to play with a headguard.
He went on to find his form again at Fulham, scoring 31 goals and getting six assists in 115 games.
