Keane: “Garner is the Best in the Business” After City Masterclass

Roy Keane has never been one to hand out compliments lightly. The former Manchester United captain is known more for his “staring daggers” punditry than for gushing over modern midfielders. However, following Everton’s pulsating 3–3 draw against Manchester City at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last night, Keane had no choice but to heap praise on Toffees star James Garner.
Centering his analysis on the 25-year-old’s performance, Keane claimed that Garner is currently the “best in the Premier League” at his specific role.
A Tactical Masterclass
In a match where Everton went toe-to-toe with the reigning champions, Garner was the orchestrator. Operating in a hybrid midfield role, he provided the defensive shield required to stifle City’s creative hubs while simultaneously acting as Everton’s primary deep-lying playmaker.
”We talk about technical ability, but I look at the brain,” Keane noted during the post-match breakdown. “What Garner did tonight against the best team in the world was a masterclass. He knows when to sit, when to press, and his delivery is top-tier. Right now, on that form, there isn’t a better all-around midfielder in that position in the league.”
