Dan Neil’s contract length revealed as Rangers complete deal

Rangers have completed their fifth signing of the summer after Dan Neil joined the club on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich, was targetted previously by Rangers in the January transfer window.

He left Sunderland as a free agent this summer, having captained the side as they won promotion to the Premier League in 2025. He had been at the Stadium of Light since 2018 and played more than 200 games for Sunderland in that time period.

A versatile midfielder who can operate as a No.6 or a No.8, Neil strengthens Rangers in the centre of midfield.

Now, despite serious competition from the English market, Neil has joined Derek McInnes’ Rangers side ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Discussing the move, McInnes said: “Dan is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.

“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.”

Neil added: “I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation of the fans to win every week and the feeling of it making or breaking people’s weekends is something that drives me.

“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person, that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”

Rangers are likely to sell Nico Raskin this summer, who has interest from several clubs on the continent. As of yet, though, no official bid has arrived.

Mo Diomande is entering the final two years of his contract at the club. Tochi Chukwuani arrived in the January window while Connor Barron completes the midfield picture.

Bailey Rice joined Kilmarnock on a season-long loan at the weekend after agreeing a new deal at Ibrox.

Rangers legend Allan McGregor has agreed a return to the club to join the new-look management team under boss Derek McInnes.

The Rangers Review understands McGregor will lead the goalkeepers following the departure of Sal Bibbo. We revealed this week that Bibbo had left the club to work alongside Frank Lampard at Coventry City.

McGregor will be supported by Conor Brennan in the goalkeeping department as he goes through his official coaching badges.

McGregor is the man that McInnes has chosen to replace Bibbo and oversee the coaching of the keepers this term. He will get down to work on Wednesday morning alongside Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin and Craig Clark.

Rangers confirmed the signing of Ivor Pandur in a £6million deal on Tuesday night and the Croatian is set to claim the No.1 jersey ahead of Liam Kelly. Rangers also have highly-rated youngsters Rydnn McGuir on their books.
