The flashpoint occurred early in the second half when United’s Bryan Mbeumo inadvertently controlled a cross with his midriff, with the ball subsequently striking his hand before Cunha turned the rebound into the net.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) took the unusual step of releasing the official audio conversation between on-field referee Michael Salisbury and the VAR hub, hoping to provide clarity. Instead, the transparency has backfired, fueling a fierce debate led by Hackett. The audio exposed a stark disconnect, revealing that the VAR team explicitly advised Salisbury to disallow the goal for a handball infraction. However, Salisbury bypassed the recommendation after a lengthy pitchside monitor review, declaring the contact accidental due to an initial deflection off the player’s hip.
Hackett strongly condemned the entire exchange, arguing that the sequence of events exposes a deeply flawed officiating infrastructure. According to Hackett, the decision was a complete misinterpretation of the laws of the game and represents one of the most egregious errors witnessed this season. He noted that the audio serves as definitive proof that the current protocol undermines the authority of the VAR room and fosters systemic inconsistency.
