Arsenal incident investigation lands West Ham with FA charge & ban ahead of Newcastle United trip

West Ham United have been hit with an FA charge ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United.

West Ham United goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa has been hit with an FA charge following an incident that took place during the controversial 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.

The Gunners won the match thanks to Leandro Trossard’s 83rd-minute winner though West Ham thought they’d grabbed a last-gasp equaliser through Callum Wilson, only for VAR to rule the goal out.

The decision to rule the goal out could prove crucial at both ends of the table as West Ham sit two points from safety in the Premier League table while Arsenal head into the final two matches two points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

In the closing stages of Sunday’s match, West Ham goalkeeping coach Barbosa was shown a red card by referee Chris Kavanagh after reacting to William Saliba kicking the ball away, which saw the Arsenal defender booked.

The FA have now shed more light on the incident that saw Barbosa land a misconduct charge and a touchline suspension for the trip to St James’ Park on Sunday.

A statement via FA Spokesperson read: “Rui Barbosa of West Ham United has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday 10 May.

“It’s alleged that around the 88th minute, the goalkeeping coach used offensive, insulting, or abusive language and/or gestures, leading to his dismissal. It’s further alleged that following the conclusion of the match, he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards a match official.

“Rui Barbosa has until Monday 18 May to provide a response.”
