Kris Boyd dumbfounded by VAR error and slams Rangers star for poor performance

Kris Boyd dumbfounded as Alistair Johnston escapes clear red card vs Rangers

Kris Boyd winced when reviewing the footage of Alistair Johnston’s challenge on Rangers‘ Mikey Moore.

The first half was full of action at Parkhead, with a goal for either side, and plenty of controversy to sink your teeth into.

Rangers were adamant that Celtic’s goal should have been ruled out for offside, despite VAR checking and clearing the incident, much to the surprise of former PGMOL chief, Keith Hackett.

And the Light Blues were also convinced that Johnston got off rather lightly for his challenge on Moore in the first half.Johnston was booked for his tackle, but Boyd was stunned that it wasn’t upgraded to a red card.

Alistair Johnston can count himself lucky vs RangersThe Light Blues have had some horrid luck this season when it comes to VAR calls, and Sunday’s clash with Celtic was no different.

Rangers have already had a goal disallowed this season for a near-identical offence to the one that saw Celtic level the game, while also having already had a red card for a tackle identical to that of Johnston’s.

The right-back was high and late to the challenge on Moore, with the Tottenham loanee complaining to the officials, and rightfully so, with footage showcasing the true extent of the tackle. 🟥 “That is a red card all day long!” Should Alistair Johnston have been sent off against Rangers for this tackle on Mikey Moore? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/C528v9ceYU — Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) May 10, 2026View TweetAnd when it was shown back on Sky Sports, Boyd could not believe that Johnston escaped a red card.

He said: “Oh 100 per cent, when you see it like that, he hits him above the ankle. You can quite clearly see it there.

“That’s a red card all day long.”Rangers’ title chances ended by hopeless officiatingRangers have certainly had their chances to accumulate more points this season, but they have had several taken away from them as a result of refereeing decisions.

Two of the biggest calls in the clash with Celtic went against them, and had they gone their way, it would almost certainly have been a very different outcome.

Celtic had momentum behind them after their equalising goal, and without it, we could quite easily have been talking about a crucial Rangers victory.

Rangers player ratings vs Celtic: Mikey Moore deserved more, James Tavernier should be ashamed

Rangers fell to a humiliating 3-1 defeat away to Celtic on Sunday.

As has been the theme with these fixtures as of late, the opening goal came inside the first 10 minutes, and it was Mikey Moore who scored it.

The Tottenham loanee was first to react after Youssef Chermiti saw his effort blocked, with an easy enough finish to give the Gers an early lead.

Rangers’ lead would last just 14 minutes, though, with Hyun-Jun Yang latching on to the end of Arne Erngel’s cross to draw the game level.

Celtic had momentum behind them from there on, with two goals early in the second half to take the game away from Rangers.

Rangers’ title hopes are now officially over, as unlikely as they were at the start of the day.

Mikey Moore wasted again vs CelticIt was Moore’s goal that set Rangers on their way once again, but it would count for nothing in the end, and not due to his own downfall.

The Gers simply didn’t get him in the game anywhere enough, and when they did, he looked dangerous, as he has done all season.vs Celtic MooreGoals 1Chances created 1Fouls won 3Dribbles completed 2Touches 22Moore won five of his eight duels in the game and completed two of only three attempted dribbles against Celtic.

Had Rangers got him more involved in the game, it would have almost certainly been a different outcome on the day.

James Tavernier sums up Rangers’ woesJames Tavernier is the supposed leader of this team, but he was quite honestly woeful against Celtic across several areas of his game.

He completed just eight of his 20 passes in the game, and failed to find a teammate with any of his seven attempted long balls.

Only 29 per cent of his attempted crosses were completed, with his final ball as bad as it has ever been this season.

Tavernier was hooked on the hour mark by Danny Rohl, and for good reason, too, when taking into account how poor he was.
