FA Confirms Ban for Sunderland’s Ballard After “Hair-Pull” Controversy

The Football Association has officially upheld the red card issued to Daniel Ballard during Sunderland’s 1-1 draw against Wolves, confirming the defender will serve a three-match suspension. The decision comes after a contentious VAR review at Molineux, where Ballard was dismissed in the 24th minute for violent conduct.
The incident involved Ballard grabbing the hair of Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare during an aerial duel. While referee Paul Tierney initially missed the flashpoint, he was advised to consult the pitchside monitor, resulting in a straight red card. In a statement released shortly after the match, the Premier League match centre clarified:
”After review, the referee issued a red card to Ballard for violent conduct. Sunderland #5 clearly pulls the hair of the Wolves player.”
The ruling has sparked fierce debate. Sunderland boss RĂ©gis Le Bris described the decision as “hard to digest,” arguing that the contact was unintentional and a natural byproduct of a physical duel. Wayne Rooney, speaking on Match of the Day, echoed those sentiments, calling the rule “ridiculous” and urging for more nuance in how accidental contact is judged.
The suspension effectively ends Ballard’s season, as he is set to miss the Black Cats’ final fixtures against Manchester United, Everton, and Chelsea.
