The Football Association has today confirmed that referee Chris Kavanagh has been placed on immediate probation following his performance in the Premier League match between Everton and Liverpool.
After careful review of the game and the significant number of controversial decisions made by Mr Kavanagh, the FA has decided to take this precautionary measure.
The probation period will allow the FA’s Refereeing Department and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to conduct a thorough internal investigation into the key incidents, including the inconsistent application of disciplinary sanctions, the handling of player confrontations, and the overall control of the match.
During this probation, Mr Kavanagh will not be appointed to any further Premier League or cup matches until the review is completed and a final judgement is reached.
The FA emphasises that this step is not a punishment but a necessary process to ensure the highest standards of refereeing are maintained and to establish exactly what happened in several disputed moments. The FA remains committed to transparency and fairness in the game. We will provide a further update once the investigation concludes.End of statement.
