Premier League Explain Lisandro Martinez’s Hair Pull Red Card vs Leeds
The Premier League have issued an explanation after Lisandro Martinez was sent off on his injury return in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Argentine defender was dismissed for violent conduct after pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair while going up for a header, marking a second Premier League game in a row in which United have had a player sent off.
In March’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, Harry Maguire was also shown a straight red card when he desperately grabbed Evanilson late in the second half, conceding a penalty for the hosts’ second goal.
Martinez missed United’s last five league games with a calf injury prior to his return on Monday, where he started alongside fellow centre-back Leny Yoro.Premier League Explain Martinez’s Red Card
Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez staringPremier League Match Centre issued an explanation following Martinez’s second-half red card, saying VAR confirmed the Argentine was guilty of violent conduct.
This aligned with referee Paul Tierney’s on-field decision, who said: “Manchester United’s six is guilty of pulling his hair, violent conduct, final decision is a red card.”
Martinez has heavily struggled with injury issues this season, with two separate setbacks limiting the Argentine to just 16 appearances in all competitions.
His continued absence could prompt United to address their centre-back situation in the summer, with the Red Devils reportedly eyeing a potential move for Nottingham Forest star Murillo.
United extended fellow centre-back Harry Maguire’s contract last week, with the 33-year-old penning fresh terms until June 2027, with the option of a further year.
Martinez Set to Miss Three Gamesmartinez man utdPrior to Monday’s game, Martinez had never been shown a red card in a Premier League match for Manchester United.
The 28-year-old defender’s only career sending off came back in 2018 when he was playing for Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia.
Martinez is now facing a three-match ban, which could result in him missing half of United’s remaining Premier League fixtures.
With the incident classified as violent conduct, the Argentine is set to miss United’s upcoming fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool.
As things stand, United are expected to welcome Maguire back into the squad for the Chelsea match, although there remains a chance his suspension could be extended after he was charged with improper conduct by the FA.
United have multiple centre-back concerns ahead of Saturday’s visit to Stamford Bridge, with Matthijs de Ligt also unlikely to be available as he continues his recovery from a back injury.
