Nottingham Forest defender Murillo issued a heartfelt apology to the City Ground supporters immediately after Sunday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Brazilian centre-back, one of Forest’s most reliable performers in the 2025/26 campaign, scored an unfortunate own goal in the 23rd minute. Under pressure from the Aston Villa attack, his attempted clearance looped past goalkeeper Matz Sels, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Neco Williams restored parity for the Tricky Trees with a powerful equaliser in the 38th minute, securing a hard-earned point at home.
Speaking in his post-match interview shortly after the final whistle, a downcast Murillo took full responsibility for the error.
“I want to apologise to every Nottingham Forest fan,” he said. “That own goal is completely my mistake. I tried to clear it safely, but it went wrong. These supporters have been amazing all season, both at home and away, and today I feel like I let them down. I’m truly sorry, and I will work hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Head coach Vítor Pereira, who took charge in February, defended his player while highlighting his character. “Murillo has been excellent for us throughout the season. One mistake does not define a player of his quality. He showed real maturity by facing the cameras straight after the game. We are a team – we fight together.”
The draw moved Nottingham Forest onto 33 points from 32 matches, keeping them in 16th place and just above the relegation battle as the season heads into its final stretch. Fans on social media were quick to show support for the 22-year-old, praising his honesty and consistent performances despite the costly error.
Murillo is expected to feature again when Forest face their next Premier League fixture. The young defender remains a cornerstone of the backline under Pereira.
