Newcastle United star set to leave in the summer has already hinted at his next career move

Kieran Trippier could leave Newcastle United as a free agent this summer.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has hinted at stepping into management once he retires from playing.

Trippier’s contract at St James’ Park is set to expire in the summer, and talks with head coach Eddie Howe are expected during the break in Premier League action for the Magpies.

The 35-year-old joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in 2022 and he has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the club.

The £12million transfer proved to be an excellent piece of business with Trippier playing a key role in the club’s transformation from a relegation-threatened side to two-time Champions League qualifiers and 2025 Carabao Cup winners.

While Trippier wants to keep on playing beyond the summer, he wouldn’t declare whether it would be at Newcastle or not.

“There’s loads of possibilities,” Trippier said. “Football’s a strange game. But I understand and respect that my contract’s up in the summer. I think it’s not rocket science that everybody knows my contract’s up.

“In the next couple of weeks, obviously me and the manager will have a talk, of course.”

Although Trippier believes he has ‘many years’ left playing he has one eye on what to do once he hangs up his boots.

“I’m far from done as a player, I think age is just a number,” Trippier explained. “With the nutrition we’ve got these days and the way you look after your body and yourself, it’s key.

“That’s what I’ve been doing throughout my career and I still feel fit, strong, like I’ve still got many years in my playing career.

“[I will take some time out] for my kids, because when you play football, you sacrifice so much.” 

Kieran Trippier’s next move

While there is uncertainty over Trippier’s future as a player, he ‘definitely’ sees himself in a coaching role one day.

“I’ve been with many players who I’ve played with in my career who are managers now and coaches,” he added.

“I’ll lean on so many people, the gaffer here. Michael Duff who’s a manager, I’ve had great experience with players who are coaching now.

“I speak to John McDermott a lot, who’s with the FA. I’ve got a lot of people to lean on, definitely see myself as being a coach in future. 

“A manager? Who knows what the future holds!”
