Shearer’s Camp Nou Fury: “Get Him Replaced”

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has launched a scathing attack on the Magpies after their Champions League dream turned into a nightmare at the Camp Nou. Following an “embarrassing” 7-2 second-leg defeat to Barcelona (8-3 on aggregate), Shearer singled out captain Kieran Trippier as the primary culprit, demanding the club find an immediate replacement for the “overrated” veteran.

The loss, which saw Newcastle concede five second-half goals, was compounded by a critical VAR-reviewed penalty just before halftime. Trippier was judged to have pulled back Raphinha, allowing Lamine Yamal to put Barça ahead. Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football, was ruthless in his assessment of the skipper’s confidence and defensive discipline.

”I’m sick of the excuses,” Shearer fumed. “Trippier today? He was a liability. He’s supposed to be the leader, but he’s out of position, giving away cheap penalties, and looked completely out of his depth against world-class pace. His confidence is shot to pieces, and it’s belittling the rest of the backline.”

The former England striker didn’t stop there, urging Eddie Howe to be ruthless in the summer window.

”If Newcastle want to belong at this level, they need a right-back who can actually defend. He’s had a great run, but tonight proved he’s a level below where we need to be. Replace him.”

With the Magpies now crashing out of Europe in humbling fashion, Shearer’s comments have intensified the debate over whether the club’s “old guard” can keep pace with the continent’s elite.
