Rangers vs Celtic: Chaotic Scenes Break Out on the Pitch as Police Struggle to Cope

Wild scenes have broken out at Ibrox Stadium after Celtic beat rivals Rangers on penalties in the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

Just a week after a dramatic 2-2 Old Firm draw in the Premiership, the two teams met again, this time in the cup. That league draw means Hearts now sit five points clear at the top of the table, putting more pressure on Rangers and Celtic to win a trophy elsewhere.

The latest match on Sunday afternoon ended 0-0 and so had to be settled with a shoot-out. After James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama missed their efforts for the home team, the Hoops were able to advance into the semis, scoring all four of their efforts, with Tomas Cvancara bagging the final penalty.

Moments after the final spot-kick, however, as the away team went to applaud their section of fans, chaos broke out at Ibrox.

Old Firm Fans Invade Ibrox After Cup Quarter-FinalGeneral view of a flare on the pitch as Rangers fans clash with police after the matchAs per journalist George Flood of The Standard, fans of both teams stormed onto the pitch. He explained: “Cvancara celebrates in front of the Copland Stand and it’s utter pandemonium now at Ibrox. There are scores of fans of both teams on the pitch, flares being lit and police and stewards everywhere. I think someone has tried to attack one of the Celtic coaches. Deary me, this is not good.”

In an update, he then added: “Thankfully the scores of pitch-invading fans looked to be kept away from each other and some semblance of order has now been restored by police. Really ugly scenes at Ibrox with tensions so high after a dramatic penalty shootout.

“Not a good look at all for either club after they each spent so long appealing to be allowed to have full away allocations again in this fixture. It might be some time again now before they get another.”

Footage of the chaos has now emerged, showing how the police struggled to deal with the pitch invasion: There Were Also Issues Ahead of the GameAround 7,500 Celtic fans were in attendance as SFA rules saw the traditional away allocation restored in the Broomloan Stand for the first time in eight years. Even ahead of the game, though, there had been off-field issues as a group of away supporters stormed the Ibrox gates and forced their way into the stadium.

As per Daily Record, Celtic fans were asked to be at Ibrox for 10:30am ahead of the 1pm kick-off. The visiting supporters were then subject to police checks, but as they were funnelled into the ground, some made a run at the gates.

A clip on social media showed a number of Celtic supporters breaching a turnstile, with some getting into the stadium as security attempted to close the entrance. The blockade eventually closed the door on the incident.
