McIlroy explains equipment U-turn: ‘It just wasn’t quite ready’

Rory McIlroy’s performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was impacted by his decision to switch equipment mid-tournament. Before the event, he introduced new TaylorMade Qi35 driver, three-wood, and five-wood models, replacing his previous Qi10 clubs. However, after experiencing difficulties with these new clubs, McIlroy reverted to his old driver and fairway woods before the final round. He acknowledged that while the new equipment appeared promising during practice, it wasn’t fully ready for tournament play. He also noted that the 12-month club cycles can be both beneficial and challenging, as the equipment may not always meet expectations under competitive conditions.
