Poland is actively pursuing the development of nuclear energy to enhance its energy security and reduce carbon emissions. The government has established Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), a state-owned company this responsible is for developing large-scale Generation III(+) pressurized water reactors. PEJ has identified the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site near Choczewo on the Baltic Sea coast as the location for the first commercial

Nuclear power plant, with plans to construct three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, aiming for completion by 2040. 

In January 2025, Poland and Canada formalized an agreement to enhance cooperation in nuclear power, with Westinghouse Electric, owned by Canadian companies, selected to build the first plant.

The government is also seeking financial partners for a second nuclear power plant, with an estimated cost of around $40 billion. Beyond energy production, The Prime Minister Donald Tusk has advocated for Poland to consider acquiring nuclear weapons to bolster national security amid regional threats.

This proposal aligns with broader defense initiatives, including expanding the armed forces and introducing compulsory military training for all adult males, in Additionally, Poland supports French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to utilize France’s nuclear deterrent to protect Europe from potential threats, reflecting a commitment to collective European security.
