Kengo Kuma and Studio Gang Among Shortlist for Nelson-Atkins Museum Expansion in Kansas City, United States

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City has announced the six architecture firms shortlisted for its major expansion project.

Among them are Kengo Kuma & Associates and Studio Gang.

The other shortlisted firms are Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Selldorf Architects, Weiss/Manfredi Architecture, and WHY Architecture.

The expansion aims to create vibrant spaces for art, immersive experiences, and community engagement.

The six finalists’ concept designs are currently on display at the museum through June 1, 2025, as part of the “Building Belonging: Designing the future of the Nelson-Atkins” exhibition. The public is invited to view the designs and provide feedback both at the exhibition and online.

Following the public review period, the museum’s Architect Selection Committee will conduct final interviews with the shortlisted firms and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees.

The chosen design will then be refined in collaboration with the museum and its stakeholders, with the goal of enhancing the museum’s campus and offerings for future generations.
