Possibly because Wilson and the Hammers ‘had history’ – Wilson had half in jest belittled the ECL title – and also because signing Wilson represented another nail in the coffin of a decent, quality transfer policy -it seemed me at the time that the Newcastle reject was only here to grind out another season in the sick bay for a few quid.

In fact Wilson turned out to be the surprise package, and performed admirably whenever called upon. His minutes were managed, for sure, but the striker popped up with memorable goals (at least, until VAR ruled them out) and proved his fitness for the role of supersub, if not ‘regular starter’.

Callum Wilson has a goal ruled out against Arsenal by VARCallum Wilson proved an excellent addition to West Ham’s squad last season

Leeds United now find themselves in the same dilemma over signing Wilson on a free transfer as their third striker. The England forward left West Ham and is now available without a fee and it’d seem a no-brainer for someone like Leeds to take him on as cover for the brittle Dominic Calvert Lewin. As insidefutbol.com suggest, the fears are similar to those held by West Ham a year ago – that Wilson is ‘brittle’ and signing him would be ‘a bit risky’.

On the contrary, the guy deserves a chance to fire in those five goals he still needs to join the PL100 club and few West Ham fans would have a harsh word to say about the effort and ability he showed when called upon at West Ham. He’ll certainly have motivation enough to notch that 100th goal before time catches up with him.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds’ stand these days – sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket… I’ve been watching since ’03 and a supporter since about 1970..

Favourite player – Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard’s injury time equaliser. Can tell I’m getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble’s debut and his last game at West Ham.

Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old.
