I’ve seen top-quality lads lose their confidence, and I’ve seen some of them fall off a cliff completely where you’re left wondering where it all went wrong. But what we are witnessing with Jarrod Bowen at West Ham this season is on a whole different level, and frankly, it’s getting embarrassing. We are heading into the final, crucial game of the season against Leeds tomorrow, a match where you need your big players to stand up, show some courage, and be counted. Instead, we’re talking about a lad who, based on his performances all year, is no longer even a subject of debate. It is an absolute fact that right now, he is the poorest player in his position anywhere in the Premier League. There’s no point hiding behind excuses or talking about what he did two years ago in Europe; that’s yesterday’s news and it’s soft.
He’s supposed to be the captain, the leader of that attack, the man driving the team forward. But every time I watch him lately, he’s just strolling around the pitch, looking completely uninterested, like he’s doing everyone a massive favor just by turning up. Where is the hunger? Where is the intensity? He used to be a threat, driving at defenders and making things happen, but now he looks completely devoid of ideas and his decision-making has been shocking. He’s predictable, he’s sluggish, and he’s constantly turning the ball over in vital areas, completely killing off his own team’s counter-attacks. Opponent left-backs must see his name on the team sheet and have a chuckle because they know exactly what he’s going to do before he even does it. He’s completely figured out, and he hasn’t shown the character or the work ethic to change it.
You cannot have passengers in this league, especially not when you are playing in a high-stakes finale at home. A dip in form is one thing—you can work your way out of that by rolling up your sleeves and doing the basics right—but when a player looks this useless for an entire campaign, it tells me there’s a serious problem with the attitude. While other dynamic wingers in the league are stepping up and evolving, Bowen has completely stagnated and left his teammates exposed. If he walks out onto that pitch tomorrow with the same lazy, casual approach we’ve seen all year, West Ham are in deep trouble. The debate is over; on current form, no starting winger in the top flight has offered less to his manager, less to his club, and less to the fans than Jarrod Bowen has this season, and it’s about time he was held accountable for it.

Look, we’ve all sat here over the years and watched great players hit a rough patch, it’s part…

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

18

post-661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-westham
["GET
