{"id":456,"date":"2026-05-12T05:46:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T05:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agajahub.com\/?p=456"},"modified":"2026-05-12T05:46:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T05:46:46","slug":"premier-league-issue-statement-on-huge-leeds-vs-tottenham-var-call-the-leeds-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agajahub.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/premier-league-issue-statement-on-huge-leeds-vs-tottenham-var-call-the-leeds-press\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier League issue statement on huge Leeds vs Tottenham VAR call &#8211; The Leeds Press"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The officials and VAR once again became the main talking point during Tottenham vs Leeds United in north London, with the visitors appearing to be denied a penalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theleedspress.com\/jamie-carragher-says-leeds-denied-second-penalty-against-spurs-as-var-rule-ignored-51233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dominic Calvert-Lewin should have had a penalty<\/a> when Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie pulled him down, and VAR ignored precedent to rule the Leeds striker offside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, VAR finally intervened again later in the game when the on-field referee missed a high boot on Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu, which was corrected, and Leeds were awarded a penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calvert-Lewin stepped up to fire in the equaliser, and the Whites finally got the rub of the green in terms of a VAR intervention in favour of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Premier League confirm VAR decision in Tottenham vs Leeds clash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jarred Gillett made a clear mistake when he failed to award a penalty for Mathys Tel\u2019s high boot on Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu in the 69th minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VAR forced the on-field referee to come to the monitor, and he had to change the decision as it was clear that Leeds deserved a penalty for the foul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Premier League issued a statement explaining the decision and indicated that the right call was eventually made after the intervention of technology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PLMatchCentre\/status\/2053937798353220026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Premier League statement on X read<\/a>: \u201cAfter VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReferee announcement: \u2018After review, Tottenham number 11 commits a foul on the Leeds attacker. The final decision is penalty kick\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Whites should have been awarded another penalty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie clearly pulled Calvert-Lewin down and was only saved by an offside call by the tiniest of margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, VAR ignored a \u2018tolerance rule\u2019, which they applied earlier in the season when a Florian Wirtz goal against Fulham was allowed to stay despite him being ruled offside by a small margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Premier League\u2019s KMI panel agreed with the VAR call on that day.
