In an unprecedented move, the Scottish FA (SFA) has issued a formal apology to Rangers FC following a high-level review of the officiating during Saturday\u2019s Old Firm derby. The admission of “significant human error” comes as referee Nick Walsh has been stood down from his upcoming Premiership assignments, effectively facing a “ban” from top-flight officiating while an internal investigation into VAR protocols is conducted.
\u200bThe controversy centers on Celtic\u2019s equalizing goal in their 3-1 victory, where Benjamin Nygren appeared to be in an offside position, obstructing Jack Butland\u2019s line of sight. While the goal was initially cleared by VAR official John Beaton, the SFA\u2019s Head of Refereeing, Willie Collum, reportedly chaired an emergency summit at Clydesdale House where it was determined the goal should have been disallowed for interference.

\u200bThe SFA\u2019s statement, released late Sunday evening, admitted that the VAR team failed to provide the referee with the definitive angle required to make an informed decision on the field.
\u200b”We acknowledge that the decision to award Celtic\u2019s first goal was incorrect under IFAB Law 11,” the statement read. “A procedural failure meant the on-field official was not presented with the specific ‘down-the-line’ angle which clearly showed the obstructing player in the goalkeeper’s direct line of vision. We offer our unreserved apologies to Rangers FC for this error.”
\u200bWalsh and Beaton Under Fire
\u200bThe fallout has not been limited to a written apology. Nick Walsh, who has been at the center of several high-profile disputes this season, will not take charge of a match in the next two rounds of Premiership fixtures. While the SFA has not used the word “suspension,” sources indicate the decision to sideline Walsh and Beaton is a direct response to the “alarming” breakdown in communication during the derby.

\u200bDespite the apology, Rangers officials remain unmoved, labeling the SFA\u2019s admission as “too little, too late.” The club has intensified its demand for the full release of the VAR audio, arguing that the apology does not address the “subjective” nature of the officials’ dialogue during the check.
