Heartbreaking : Alec bohm just divorce his wife because of…..
One of the hottest hitters in the game for the first 40 games or so, Alec Bohm has cooled off considerably. You don’t need me to interpret that graph; it’s right there in front of you. Looking at the baseball card numbers, you can see it as well (cherry picked dates and everything!).
Games 1-40: 160 PA, .343/.406/.539 (.945 OPS), 15/25 BB/K, 4 HR, 32 RBI, .391 BABIP
Games 41-67: 119 PA, .211/.252/.349 (.601 OPS), 5/14 BB/K, 2 HR, 20 RBI, .219 BABIP
If you’re anything like me, once you get past the startling difference in OPS is how much luck has been involved for Bohm. I know that math can be hard sometimes, but it doesn’t take Eratosthenes to see the nearly 180 point difference in BABIP. When he’s hitting the ball, it’s at someone.
The fear with Bohm and his cold streaks is that he’ll start to expand the zone in order to hit his way out of it. In the past, we’ve seen, at least anecdotally, that there will be certain spots around the edges that he will begin to go after, getting himself out rather than staying with a patient approach and getting pitches to do damage with. Of course last year, you could simply throw the ball down the middle of the plate and nothing was going to happen anyway.
This season, whatever it was the Kevin Long was preaching to Bohm in the offseason, it has stuck. Through these first 60+ games, Bohm has not missed on a whole lot when it’s been around the zone.
But what we’re concerned about is the last few games. If we’re looking to see if he was falling back into “old habits” where he would chase anything in the same zip code as the plate, the answer is pretty clearly no. We’ve seen stories about how an organizational emphasis on not chasing was applied as the approach of choice to begin the season. It worked for some (Bohm) and not for others (Nick Castellanos). The mantra stated over and over was to stick with it, keep having a patient approach at the plate as results would follow.
Looking specifically at Bohm, that mantra looks like it has been followed, even to this day.
That’s really encouraging since it shows the lessons and tenets that Long has been preaching have taken root and led to success. So that means we have to look towards other possible reasons for the struggles.
As I stated before, the number that leaps off the page is the BABIP. A .219 number is almost impossibly, comically low. The best word that one could probably use is “unsustainable”, but in baseball, nothing is impossible. But if you wanted to look for something encouraging at least is that Bohm is still hitting the ball pretty hard.
There was a bit of a dip there as you can see, but it’s not so out of whack that concern would set in. Could there be improvement? Of course…but then there probably wouldn’t be the struggles to talk about in the first place.
What truly looks like the biggest problem is one that is the age old issue in baseball through history: pitchers have adjusted. Look at this graph about pitch usage against Bohm as the season has progressed.
Fastballs are up of late while the offspeed and breaking stuff are down. Why is that? I’m sure you can guess the next graph.
If he ain’t hittin’ the old number one that hard, why not just keep throwing it to him?
To begin the season, Bohm was hitting the fastball and hitting it hard. Pitchers are not major league pitchers because they keep repeating their mistakes. They started throwing it less. That trend seems to have reversed itself in the past month or so. Pitchers are throwing the fastball more because he’s not hitting it hard when he does hit it. They’re just throwing it past him more often right now.
If Bohm wants to get back to his early season successes, he’s going to have to hit the fastball again.
It’s all fine too. These are the little things that happen during a season as long as baseball’s is. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse where hitters and pitchers are constantly adjusting to one another’s strengths and weaknesses. Right now, there seems to be something pitchers are exploiting in Bohm’s approach at the plate. The team is likely aware of it and it working with him to adjust back. It could take some time, but it should happen.
This should not diminish what he has done so far this season. Looking at the ballot for National League third baseman, Bohm is pretty easily the leader in the clubhouse and should be the starter for the All-Star Game. Voting being what it is, who knows if that will come to fruition, but if we’re talking about the rest of the season, there needs to be a change back his fastball demolishing ways.
He’ll get there. He showed it last night!
