Polish president says US assures him it won’t reduce troop levels as he revives ‘Fort Trump’ idea

Polish President Andrzej Duda has announced that U.S. officials have assured him there are no plans to reduce American troop levels in Poland and along NATO’s eastern front. This assurance comes as President Duda revives the proposal for a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, colloquially known as “Fort Trump.” The idea was initially suggested during President Donald Trump’s earlier term but had not been realized.

Currently, approximately 10,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Poland, a presence that was increased following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. President Duda emphasized the importance of maintaining strong U.S. support for regional security, particularly in light of ongoing concerns about Russia’s actions in Eastern Europe. He reassured the Polish public that measures are in place to ensure regional peace and stability.

The revival of the “Fort Trump” proposal underscores Poland’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and its strategic partnership with the United States. While the proposal has not yet led to the establishment of a permanent U.S. military base, the recent assurances from U.S. officials indicate a continued commitment to the current troop presence in the region.
