EU foreign ministers to discuss Rwanda sanctions options over Congo war

European Union (EU) foreign ministers are scheduled to convene today in Brussels to deliberate on potential sanctions against Rwanda in response to its alleged support for the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This meeting follows escalating violence in eastern DRC, where M23 forces have advanced, capturing key cities such as Goma, and raising concerns about a broader regional conflict.

Belgium has been particularly vocal, urging the EU to impose sanctions on Rwanda, including suspending the EU-Rwanda partnership on critical raw materials and halting security dialogues.  Similarly, the European Parliament has called for a freeze on EU aid to Rwanda over the conflict.

Human Rights Watch has expressed concerns that the EU’s military support to Rwanda could risk complicity in alleged violations in eastern Congo.

The EU’s response to Rwanda’s involvement in the DRC conflict is under intense scrutiny, with discussions focusing on the appropriate measures to address the situation.
