Chelsea: John Obi Mikel makes Enzo Maresca sack claim as he questions summer transfer business

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has openly criticized the club’s recent performances and questioned the summer transfer strategy under manager Enzo Maresca. Following Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton, Mikel expressed frustration with Maresca’s assertion that the team was ahead of schedule, despite the poor result. He emphasized that Chelsea’s historical status as a Champions League club means such statements can demotivate players.

Mikel also directed criticism at Jadon Sancho, who joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United. Sancho began his tenure with two goals and three assists in his first nine league appearances but has since experienced a significant dip in form, contributing only one assist in the last 12 matches. Mikel urged Sancho to “wake up” and accused him of deceiving Chelsea supporters, stressing the need for Sancho to step up and prove himself in the Premier League.

 

Regarding the summer transfer business, Mikel questioned the club’s decision to loan out Joao Felix, who had signed a seven-year contract just six months prior. He suggested that Maresca’s assessment led to Felix’s departure, raising concerns about the club’s recruitment strategy.
