President Donald Trump has recently reiterated his proposal for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States. In a February 9, 2025, interview during the Super Bowl pre-show, Trump stated, “Yeah it is,” when asked if his suggestion was serious. He added, “I think Canada would be much better off being the 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada. And I’m not going to let that happen.”

This marks a continuation of Trump’s earlier remarks. In December 2024, during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, he referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada,” suggesting that Canada consider joining the U.S. to avoid potential tariffs.

Canadian officials have responded firmly to these proposals. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc remarked that Trump’s comments are no longer perceived as jokes, indicating a serious undermining of Canada’s sovereignty. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also dismissed the idea, stating there is “not a snowball’s chance in hell” of Canada joining the United States.

These discussions have sparked significant debate and concern within Canada, with many viewing Trump’s remarks as a challenge to the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
