**NHL Trade Talk: Why a Cody Ceci Trade at 50% Retained Isn’t Possible for the Oilers**
A recent post on the site discussed the possibility of the Edmonton Oilers acquiring Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks with 50% of his salary retained. However, this idea overlooked a crucial rule regarding salary retention, making the trade unlikely.
The issue lies in the fact that the Sharks have already reached the maximum allowed retention on three players, meaning they cannot retain any more salary for the remainder of the season. As Jonathan Willis pointed out, “If you’re writing about the Oilers bringing back Cody Ceci with salary retention, you should be aware that San Jose has already used its three retention slots.”
PuckPedia further clarified that a team cannot receive a player with salary retention unless that retention occurred on a contract that has expired and the player is under a new deal. Since Ceci is still playing under his original $3.25 million contract with the Oilers, which has one year remaining, he cannot be traded back to Edmonton with salary retention until that deal ends.
