Daniel Farke makes an honest admission about Leeds United key defender as he makes brutal claims ahead of Manchester United game

Daniel Farke Disappointed with Defensive Lapses Despite Leeds’ Penalty Heroics Against West Ham

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke expressed clear frustration with his side’s defending after they surrendered a two-goal lead in stoppage time during their FA Cup quarter-final clash with West Ham United on Sunday. Speaking in the post-match interview at the London Stadium, the German coach admitted he was disappointed with his defenders even as Leeds advanced to the semi-finals via a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory following a 2-2 draw.

Leeds looked comfortable after goals from Ao Tanaka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave them a 2-0 advantage deep into added time. However, late strikes from West Ham forced extra time, exposing defensive frailties that Farke had been keen to address.

“We never do it the easy way,” Farke told reporters. “I am disappointed with the defenders today. We were excellent for long periods and created a great cushion, but the way we conceded those two goals in stoppage time – it’s not acceptable. Too many mistakes, poor organisation and individual errors at the back. We have to be much more ruthless and solid.”

Despite the late collapse, Farke praised the character shown in the penalty shoot-out, where goalkeeper Lucas Perri made crucial saves to send Leeds through to a semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley – their first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 1987.

“Reaching the semi-finals is another piece of history for this club and I’m delighted for the players and fans,” he added. “But we cannot afford to defend like that again. Ahead of the Manchester United game in the Premier League, we will make changes. We will review the defensive setup, work on concentration and communication, and ensure we are ready for a tough fixture at Old Trafford.”

Farke confirmed the squad will train hard on defensive principles in the coming days. The victory keeps Leeds’ cup dream alive, but the manager made it clear that defensive improvements are non-negotiable if they are to compete consistently at the highest level.

Supporters will hope the promised changes deliver a more assured performance when Leeds face Manchester United midweek. Farke’s honest assessment once again highlighted his high standards, even in victory.
