Exclusive: Rangers Launch Fresh Move to Bring Josh Windass Back to Ibrox

Rangers have made a fresh approach to Wrexham forward Josh Windass to discuss a potential return to Ibrox, GiveMeSport understands.
The move is being heavily driven by Gers manager Danny Röhl, who is eager to reunite with a player who previously flourished under his management at Sheffield Wednesday.
This development follows an unsuccessful attempt by the Glasgow giants to secure the 32-year-old playmaker during the January transfer window—an advance that was firmly rebuffed by Wrexham.
The State of Play
While informal contact has been established with the player’s camp to gauge his interest in returning to Scotland, no formal club-to-club talks have taken place yet.
Wrexham, backed by their Hollywood ownership, made it clear in January that they had zero appetite for selling the versatile attacker. Windass only moved to the Racecourse Ground last summer on a free transfer, signing a long-term contract that keeps him tied to the English Championship side until June 2028.
The Welsh club is expected to put up a firm fight to retain his services after a strong campaign where Windass delivered 21 goal contributions, nearly guiding them into the Championship play-offs.
The Danny Röhl Factor
The driving force behind Rangers’ renewed persistence is undoubtedly Danny Röhl. The German tactician, who took the hot seat at Ibrox in October 2025, has made prioritizing robust, high-character players a cornerstone of his recruitment strategy.
Röhl knows exactly what Windass brings to a dressing room. The two formed a close bond at Sheffield Wednesday, where Windass played an instrumental role in the Owls’ famous “great escape” from relegation in the 2023/24 season before netting 13 goals the following year.
Windass has been glowing in his praise for Röhl in the past, previously calling him:
”The best coach I’ve ever had by far… the way he sees football and explains it is unbelievable.”
With Rangers looking to rebuild and mount a stronger challenge in the Scottish Premiership after losing out on the title to rivals Celtic, Röhl view’s Windass’ versatility and familiarity with the club as an ideal fit.
