Coventry City owner Doug King on charging Leicester fans £45 for next month’s derby:

Coventry City Defend £45 Leicester Derby Ticket Price Amid Fan Debate
Coventry City owner Doug King has defended the club’s decision to charge Leicester City supporters £45 for tickets to next month’s highly anticipated Midlands derby, insisting the pricing reflects the scale and significance of the occasion.

Speaking about the controversy, King emphasised the value of local derbies in the Championship, describing them as marquee fixtures that go beyond an ordinary league match.
“We think local derbies are great experiences,” King said. “Leicester, Birmingham, West Bromwich Albion… we believe our local derby partners are big games.”

King also pointed to the financial realities of life outside the Premier League, stressing that Championship clubs do not enjoy the same commercial freedom.
“We’re not printing money in the Championship,” he added, underlining the need for clubs to maximise revenue from major fixtures.
The decision, however, has sparked mixed reactions among supporters. While some Leicester fans have criticised the price as excessive, a section of the Coventry fanbase has come out in support of the club’s stance.

One Coventry supporter dismissed the backlash, saying:
“Doug’s a businessman and can charge what he feels is a reasonable price. Non-season ticket home fans pay the same — are they moaning? Get over it and move on. There are more important issues to cry about.”
With tensions already high ahead of the derby, the ticket pricing row has only added extra spice to what promises to be a fiercely contested and emotionally charged encounter. Big prices for a big occasion — but as expected, not everyone is convinced. ⚽
