Newcastle United and Sunderland tipped for ‘substantial’ punishment after ugly incident

Four players were cautioned after a brawl in the closing stages of the Wear-Tyne Derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle United and Sunderland could be hit with a “substantial” fine following a mass brawl that marred the closing stages of the latest Wear-Tyne Derby, according to former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett.
Tempers flared late in the fiercely contested Premier League clash when a confrontation broke out involving Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw and Wilson Isidor. What began as a flashpoint quickly escalated, drawing in several other players as officials scrambled to restore order on the pitch.

Referee Peter Bankes eventually brought the situation under control and issued yellow cards to Bruno Guimarães, Joe Willock, Wilson Isidor and Malick Thiaw for their involvement in the melee. No red cards were shown, but the scale of the incident has placed both clubs under scrutiny from the authorities.
Speaking on the aftermath, Hackett suggested disciplinary action is likely, warning that the Football Association takes a dim view of mass confrontations and may look to impose significant financial penalties on both sides.

Despite the controversy, Sunderland kept their composure in the closing moments of added time to secure the result. The outcome extended the Black Cats’ remarkable unbeaten Premier League run against Newcastle to 10 matches and saw them leapfrog their rivals in the league table.
While Sunderland celebrated another derby success, both clubs now await the FA’s verdict, with the fallout from the heated encounter potentially continuing long after the final whistle.
