CLINTON MORRISON FIRES WARNING TO COVENTRY CITY AFTER IPSWICH DEFEAT AND PRESTON SETBACK
Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison has urged Coventry City to rediscover their sharpness quickly after a difficult week that saw Frank Lampard’s side fall 3-0 to Ipswich Town before being held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Preston North End.
Coventry entered the clash at Portman Road in red-hot form, having won 11 of their previous 12 matches, but a ruthless Ipswich display halted their charge. Their response against Preston was far from convincing, with North End—reduced to 10 men—managing to stretch the Sky Blues’ winless run to two matches.
Despite the slight wobble, Lampard’s men remain in a strong position. Coventry are still 10 points clear of third-place Millwall in the Championship table and have netted an impressive 51 goals in just 20 league games. Supporters will be eager to see an immediate return to winning ways, but the buffer provides breathing space as they chase automatic promotion.
This season marks Coventry’s sixth consecutive campaign in the Championship since earning promotion from League One in 2019/20. It is, however, their first season beginning without long-term manager Mark Robins, who oversaw finishes of fifth, ninth, and fifth in the past three years. Expectations remain high under Lampard as the club looks to finally secure a return to the Premier League.
Still, Morrison believes the recent performances should serve as a reminder that the Championship is unforgiving.
“Coventry need to be careful,” the former striker warned. “This league doesn’t wait for anyone. A winless run of two can quickly turn into three or four if they’re not sharp. They’ve been excellent this season, but they must keep their standards high.”
Morrison, who represented Coventry from 2008 to 2010, knows the pressures of the division well and insists that Lampard’s side must not allow recent setbacks to derail what has so far been an outstanding campaign.
With fixtures coming thick and fast, the Sky Blues will now be looking to reassert their dominance and ensure that their promotion push stays firmly on track.
