Leeds United edged a little closer to Premier League safety after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, sealed by a stoppage-time equaliser from Sean Longstaff.
The Whites came into the match with less pressure following back-to-back league wins, and with an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on the horizon this Sunday.
Even so, Daniel Farke named a strong starting XI. It looked like Bournemouth had snatched all three points, with Rayan seemingly doing enough to win it for the hosts.
But Longstaff struck deep into stoppage time to cap off a solid away display and earn Leeds a valuable point on the road.
The late equaliser prompted a furious reaction from Andoni Iraola, who was convinced that the goal should have been disallowed.
The Bournemouth boss had reasons to be frustrated as just a couple of minutes earlier, a third Bournemouth goal was ruled out for offside by the tiniest of margins.
Longstaff’s goal was reviewed by VAR for a possible offside, with Joel Piroe standing in an offside position, and officials also looked at whether he was obstructing the goalkeeper’s view.
The check was complete, and the goal was given. However, Iraola was not convinced as he repeatedly pointed with his fingers to suggest that Piroe was in an offside position.
Iraola wanted VAR to rule against the goal. However, Leeds were jubilant once the goal was given, and they earned a valuable point to move to 40 points.
The Bournemouth boss was unhappy as just moments earlier his side were denied a goal, and now they lost two points in their quest for European qualification.
The Whites are now more or less safe
Back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Wolves had already eased the pressure, and this point at Bournemouth edges Leeds even closer to securing their Premier League status.
They still hold a nine-point cushion over the relegation zone, despite having played a game more than Tottenham, and it all but guarantees another season in the top flight.
One more win should be enough, and they will fancy their chances against an already relegated Burnley side at Elland Road on May 1, where survival could be confirmed.
Leeds turned in a strong performance away from home and were good value for the draw against Bournemouth in the end.
Daniel Farke will now turn his focus to the biggest match of their season as they head to London to face Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup final.
