Tuchel’s Post-Match Fury Plunges World Cup Officiating into Chaos

A war of words has erupted following England’s breathtaking, highly controversial 3–2 victory over co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Despite securing passage to the quarter-finals, England manager Thomas Tuchel launched an astonishing post-match tirade against referee Alireza Faghani and the VAR officials, calling the standard of tournament refereeing “just not good enough.”
Azteca Drama Sparks Global Debate
The encounter had everything: a quickfire double from Jude Bellingham within 98 seconds, a fighting comeback from the host nation, and an hour-long pre-match delay due to relentless thunderstorms in Mexico City.
However, the fixture will ultimately be remembered for two massive VAR interventions that altered the course of the match and left the English camp incensed.
The first major point of friction came in the 54th minute when young England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off following a high-footed challenge on Jesús Gallardo. While the on-field referee did not initially penalize the challenge, the VAR booth urged a pitchside monitor review, resulting in a direct red card.
England temporarily steadied the ship when Anthony Gordon was brought down by Mexico keeper Raúl Rangel, allowing Harry Kane to coolly slot home a penalty and put England 3–1 up.
The Flashpoint: Kane’s Contentious Penalty Concession
The peak of the officiating row arrived shortly after. Harry Kane was judged by the VAR room to have clipped Brian Gutiérrez in the England penalty area while attempting a defensive clearance. Faghani was again sent to the monitor, reversing his original decision to award Mexico a crucial lifeline penalty. Raúl Jiménez scored from the spot to make it 3–2, guaranteeing a frantic final 20 minutes.
BBC pundit Alan Shearer strongly disagreed with the penalty overturn during commentary:
”Kane does clip the player’s foot in there, but that is not enough to give a penalty for me. I didn’t think it was the right decision. I didn’t think it was a clear and obvious error. I didn’t think it was enough to turn it over.”
Tuchel Unleashes Fury on Officials
In an emotionally charged post-match press conference, a furious Thomas Tuchel did not hold back, explicitly questioning the tournament’s competitive integrity and the consistency of the replay crew.
”Just not good enough. The referees just aren’t good enough, fourth officials just not good enough. It’s the bottom line,” Tuchel raged to BBC Sport. “VAR overturns a clear and obvious mistake for the penalty? Absolutely not. They overturned a situation where the referee doesn’t even give a foul.”
Tuchel later doubled down, warning that such erratic implementations of technology risk sending world-class teams crashing out on a whim.
”It’s just erratic, it’s just unreliable in matches. Now we have fourth officials who just scream at you if you put one foot out of a coaching zone. They can send any team out in any moment.”
While some pundits defended the final decisions as technically correct calls in the end, the resulting public fallout has prompted emergency focus on refereeing assignments, with fans and teams alike seeking assurances on VAR consistency before the quarter-finals commence.
